Biography

Hey everyone! I’m Rachael Kennedy: a 5 foot 9, slightly lanky, Canadian singer/songwriter on a mission: a mission to play indie pop melodies with lyrics that will make you think about yourself, your friends, love, your dog, the universe, your mom, and the state of the world you live in. To get a better idea of the kind of music I play, picture this: If Bob Dylan had a granddaughter who grew up next to Coldplay and whose best friends were John Mayer and Tegan and Sara… that person would be me. As for the rest of my life, I am an over-thinker, over-achiever, and a fantastic poker player. I don’t read much, but I wish I did. I have a cat named Chomper who rocks my socks and follows me everywhere. I feel an uncontrollable need to be ‘the best’ at everything, making me quite competitive and I suppose, maybe… sometimes a little hard to enjoy a casual game of cards with. I like playing lots of sports like hockey, basketball, rugby, tennis, swimming, squash, wakeboarding and snowboarding. I am completely and utterly intrigued by the universe- there is nothing that baffles me, confuses me, or fascinates me more. I have an addiction to going to the movies and thus, an addiction to popcorn. Literally. I believe with all of me, that music makes the world a better place. I love playing pranks on people and I laugh at least 20 times a day. This uncontrollable laughter has been going on for 19 years. I tend to swear A LOT in scary or dangerous situations- it’s my default coping mechanism. I love the ocean. I write songs when I’m sad, happy, angry, anxious, sleeping, over-thinking, and in all other emotional or physical states you can think of. But most of all, I love music in everything-it is the fuel to my functioning as a human being. If music were a person, I would marry it. This passion for making music began when I was about 15; when I started learning about how the world really works. It was as if all of the horrible and wonderful things that go on in the world were colliding inside of my head, slowly creating a mind that would simply and unconditionally have to make music. I have been influenced by almost everyone and everything; Coldplay, Tegan and Sara, a service trip to Ethiopia that changed my life, Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor, John Mayer, Much Music, Death Cab for Cutie, Taylor Swift, The Beatles, the ‘Titanic’, Metric, Blink 182, Sufjan Stevens, Kristin Wiig, Jennifer Garner, my grade 11 social studies teacher, Jack Johnson, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Sue Sylvester, Animal Planet, John Butler Trio, Mumford and Sons, and U2, to name a few. But before you stop reading this outrageously long life blurb, I leave you with one last thing to sum everything up: There’s a feeling I get when I hear a song that resonates within me in such an incredible way and on so many levels - it’s literally indescribable. If I can create that feeling in people through my music, my life will be complete. Done. See you later. Holla.
